ICAO has been operating in Nairobi to control Somalia’s airspace since 1992, following the collapse of the country’s central government. The organization has been working with the Somali government to rebuild and modernize the country’s aviation infrastructure.
In recent years, the Somali government has made significant progress in taking control of its airspace, including the establishment of a new Civil Aviation Authority and the development of a comprehensive airspace management plan. As a result, ICAO has decided that it is no longer necessary for the organization to continue its operations in Nairobi.
ICAO’s decision to end its operation in Nairobi is a positive step towards Somalia regaining full control of its airspace and ensuring the safety and efficiency of its aviation sector. The Somali government will now be responsible for managing its own airspace, with support from ICAO and other international partners as needed.
